BEL 50 Asks: Who Wants A Gourmet Waffle Sandwich?

Bread is so three years ago. The new thing to house your sandwich? A gourmet waffle, natch. At least chef Joey Altman think so. He's launching BEL 50 this October in River North - the eatery will specialize in gourmet waffle sandwiches, with both sweet and savory options. Altman compares the waffles to country bread, and they will be stuffed with goodies like short rib with horseradish crème fraîche or slow-roasted pulled pork with smashed avocado, prosciutto, Brie, caramelized onions and fig chutney (that one is pictured above). For dessert there's options like a waffle stuffed with peanut butter, banana and local honey.

The waffle maker will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner - but you probably shouldn't eat all three meals a day at this joint, as man cannot live on bread-like waffle alone. Look for an opening later this month (738 North Clark Street).
