LA pastrami burger, this weekend The Original Tops has a treat. In honor of the Pasadena restaurant's 60th anniversary, the Tops Special is only 60 cents today and tomorrow (Oct. 19-20). The Special is pretty special - a half-pound burger topped with an extraordinary amount of thinly sliced pastrami, plus whatever cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickle and house Thousand Island dressing can fit on the bun.
Stephen Bicos turned an old-school coffee shop into a walk-up burger joint in 1952, helping pioneer the fast-casual concept of American dining. His sons John and Chris still own and operate The Original Tops. Their uncle Terry Bicos opened a couple of similar establishments, including the Tops on Walnut Avenue in Pasadena (with the drive-thru). At any location, the burgers are legendary, as are the ginormous amounts of zucchini or French fries you get. Seriously, one serving can feed four people.
The deal at The Original Tops is good all-day both days (3838 E. Colorado Blvd., 626-449-4412).
