6 Food-Centric Events For Chicago Ideas Week

It’s Chicago Ideas Week, so put those thinking caps on but keep those appetites in check. In addition to the slew of speakers and presenters flown in from around the country, a few local businesses are offering behind the-scenes access to their shops. We scanned the list so you don’t have to and picked out six food and drink focused workshops to see a different side of the culinary industry.

Floriole Café and Bakery: Farm Fresh Bread
Join pastry chef Sandra Holl for a tour of the bakery dedicated to using fresh and local ingredients. The tour will be accompanied by a sampling of the bakery’s bread and other baked treats (Tuesday, 6-8:30 PM).

mk the Restaurant: Seasonal and Local Cooking
See how a chef shop by joining executive chef Erick Williams at Green City Market as he chooses ingredients for a cooking demo that will follow at the restaurant (Wednesday, 9 AM-12 PM).

Butcher and the Burger: Fish Monger Class
Do not fear the fish. With some guidance from Chef Al Sternweiler guests will learn the most basic and advance techniques for butchering various types of sea chicken. The demo concludes with fresh ground fish burgers (Wednesday, 4-6 PM).

City Winery: Winery Tour, Into to Wine Make and Wine Tasting
Get a peek at the process of making wine in Chicago. Beverage Director Nathan Benditzson will lead a tour of the winery while explaining what it takes to make the ideal glass of vino with the help of a few samples
(Wednesday, 6:30-8 PM).

Goose Island Beer Co.: Quality & Innovation
This label may be getting popular nationally, but it will never forget its roots in the heart of Fulton Market. Take a tour of the quality lab and learn what it takes to make the beloved craft brews (Thursday, 1:30-2:30 PM).

Koval Distillery: Wonders of Whiskey
The first distillery located in Chicago since prohibition is offering a taste of their organic spirits. Distillery Ambassador Kristine Sherred will discuss the unique Chicago drinking culture over samples of the hooch (Sunday, 1-3 PM).
