Fiesta
Whether tequila is a friend or foe, few appreciate the subtle differences in varieties. Part of Zocalo's week of Mexican Independence Day celebrations, a side-by-side tasting will take place with blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas from Herradura and El Jimador. There will also be passed appetizers, a signature cocktail and live music tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Tickets cost $30 (312-302-9977).
Beer Me
We can’t predict the outcome of tonight’s Bears verses Packers game, but we can predict where football fans will be drinking this weekend. Fatpour Tap Works opens tomorrow with 50 beers on tap, a two-story keg cooler and four tables with built-in draft systems. The new bar is located at 2005 W. Division Street in Wicker Park (773-698-8940).
Mexican Independence Day
True to Mexican tradition, the Independence Day festivities at Mercadito kick of at 10 PM with a DJ on Saturday. All weekend guests can enjoy additional specialty menu items including Huarache Mexicano; chile guajillo with masa, black bean hash, cabbage, crema fresca, cotija cheese with a choice of steak, chicken or pork al pastor; and La Patria cocktail made with tequila, muddled orange, jalapeno and Xocomole bitters (312-329-9555).
Shuck That
It’s a bit of a fishy battle, but the semifinals of “Chicago Gourmet’s Supreme Shucker" Oyster Shucking Contest will be held at BOKA on Sunday from noon to 3 PM. Ten semi-finalists armed with an oyster shucker will attempt to out shuck the competition for a spot in the finals hosted by Supreme Lobster & Seafood Co. at Chicago Gourmet (312-337-6070).
