Elf Cafe is one of the best places for vegetarian food in town, mostly because it's just real food, no faux meats, no wacky replacement ingredients, plus it's been BTO since day one. Earlier this summer the owners, including chef Scott Zwiezen, announced plans to expand in the space next door, and we just got a note that ground has officially been broken so it's full steam ahead. But they need your help - time to invest in Elf Futures.
According to the e-blast, "Elf Futures work just like a gift certificate but are redeemable for double the purchase value." So that means if you purchased a $50 gift certificate, you'll get $100 dollars worth of food and drinks. It's kind of like a Kickstarter/Groupon hybrid, except unlike Groupon, all of the money goes directly into to the cafe. "So you're helping us with some immediate expansion costs while getting a lot more for your
investment," they add. Genius, really, granted the cafe stays in business. With six years under its belt - the anniversary is next month - chances are good it will be here a nice long time, at least long enough to redeem your gift certificates.
So there's some risk, but it's the same when you buy wine futures, which this is based on - you lay down some cash for something that may or may not pan out. But there are people who love Elf, or just love this idea, and can afford to pony up some dollas, win or lose. Those interested can pick up Elf Futures during regular business hours at the cafe from September 22 through October 31. They're redeemable for a whole year beginning January 1, 2013, through January 1, 2014. Oh, and about that pending beer and wine license - the public hearing is set for tomorrow, so you Echo Parkians can get out and show your support.
