New York Dining Deals and Events: September 10-16

Vendy Awards this weekend! 

Monday

Kickoff the week with a bargain at East Villager JoeDoe, offering $4 beers at the bar throughout September in honor of their fourth anniversary. Feeling peckish? Order a snack like some deviled duck eggs from their appetizer menu.

Tuesday

Chef Richard Sandoval is unveiling his limited edition Herradura Tequila with a special dinner at Maya tonight. The $75 three-course tasting menu including mahi mahi ceviche, tamarind braised lamb shank and horchata flan, with tequila pairings. Wednesday

Food writer and cooking instructor Dana Jacobi will host a class on Nordic cuisine at the Bowery Culinary Center tonight from 6-9 PM. Students will learn how to make Scandinavian dishes like beet salad with horseradish, cucumber and sweet onion salad, and Danish red berry pudding with fresh cream. The evening runs $55, and tickets can be purchased here.

Thursday

Today marks the opening of Little Italy’s Feast of San Gennaro with the 11th Annual Cannoli Eating Competition from 2-3 PM, followed by the blessing of the participating cafes, shops, and vendors from 6-7 PM. Friday

Aspiring mixologists can learn how to roast, blend, and muddle their way to excellent fall cocktails today at the Institute of Culinary Education, with a Greenmarket Mixology class helmed by Michael Cecconi (formerly of Back Forty, Savoy). The $85 class runs from 6:30-9:30pm, with an optional excursion to the Union Square Greenmarket in the morning to select produce for the class. Get all the details and reserve your spot here.

Weekend

The 8th Annual Vendy Awards comes to Governor’s Island from 12:30-5 PM on Saturday, with the some of the city’s best street food vendors competing for the top spot. Ticket holders can sample fare from all of the contestants - like carne asada tacos from Piaztlan Authentic Mexican Food and lamb gyros from Hamza & Madina Halal Food - and cast their vote for the People’s Taste Award. Admission starts at $95 for AYCE food and drink, and tickets can be purchased here.

Brooklyn Grange and the Rockaway Beach Club Concessions host the 2nd Annual NYC Honey Fest on Saturday from 10 AM-7 PM. The festivities include beekeeping classes and demos, a beer tent with honey beer, and a honey tasting. Get more info and directions to the event here.

Ditmas Park flower shop and bar Sycamore teams up with neighbor The Farm on Adderley for their third annual Pig Roast on Saturday, where visitors can spend the afternoon sampling spit-roasted pork and sipping on $5 pints in the bar’s pretty backyard. Space is limited so guests should reserve their spot ahead of time - general admission is $25 and includes a plate with sides.
