The third annual Feastival takes place this Wednesday, September 12, taking over Pier 9 on Columbus Boulevard. The gala event supports the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe, and is co-chaired by three of Philadelphia’s most respected restaurateurs: Stephen Starr, Audrey Claire Taichman and Michael Solomonov (Zahav, Federal Donuts, Percy Street Barbecue). We caught up with chef Solomonov via e-mail to find out some details, including what he’ll be serving and his favorite bite from last year’s event (hint: think musical drumsticks...).
How did you get involved in Feastival?
The first year it took place, Audrey asked me to become a part of her vision and I was thrilled at the invitation.
You’ve got so much going on - Citron & Rose will open soon on the Main Line, a second Federal Donuts location is in the works - how do you make time for events like Feastival?
It's going to be a busy fall for sure, but it's important to always take time off for important things, like supporting the arts and Philly's restaurant community.
At last year’s Feastival you brought the donut robot and handed out fresh-made Federal Donuts. Is it coming back?
Yes, the donut robot will be making a repeat performance this year, and we've come up with a 'top secret' Feastival flavor.
Did you have a chance to sample the food at last year’s Feastival? Any favorites?
I thought Questlove's fried chicken was off the hook.
Were you ever a performer? Did you play an instrument growing up? Act in plays?
No musical instruments, but I did act in a few school plays.
Do you ever get a chance to attend any Fringe or Live Arts Festival shows?
I have seen a few performances in past years and I loved them. I do hope to catch a few this year.
