Best Thing We Ate Yesterday: Prosciutto and Fig Sandwich at Proof

Here's how it works at Proof Bakery in Atwater Village:

11:54 AM: Bakery Tweets and Facebooks sandwich flavors of the day.

11:55 AM: We decide where we're going for lunch.

1:04 PM: Arrive at bakery, get in long line and watch sandwich pile dwindle as every person ahead of us orders. Heirloom LA's Matthew Poley and Tara Maxey unexpectedly show up. They're also there because of Tweet.

1:11 PM: Still undecided between tomato, feta and basil; eggplant, garlic and arugula; prosciutto, fig and butter; and ham, gruyere and whole-grain mustard. The bread, this lovely soft French bread with fleur de sel sprinkled on top. We order one of each. "Leftovers," we think. And a chocolate chip cookie because omg, have you ever had those cookies?

1:24 PM: Get text from friend. "Lunch?" We explain that we're already at Proof and just ordered a bunch of sandwiches. "Get here."

1:27 PM: Get back in line to order more sandwiches. Only six tomato and feta left. We get two more.

1:30 PM: We try not to eat sandwiches before friend arrives. Caved. We try to save half of the prosciutto and fig. Can't. We successfully hold off killing that ham sandwich.

1:32 PM: The bakery's daily sandwich allotment - depleted. People still arrive hoping to get one or five.

Lesson learned: See the Tweet, get there. Pronto.
