Best Thing We Ate Today: Houston's Veggie Burger

It might be because the entire place smells like grilled beef, but the veggie burger at Houston's is one of the most surprisingly delicious things we've had this week. It's a mix of rice, black beans, beets and the secret ingredient, prunes, so it has this ground-meat textural quality without being too mushy. It's grilled, topped with the basics (lettuce, tomato, cheese) and served on a bun that's made in-house, another thing we didn't know about the chain. Whatever anyone wants to say about Houston's, it's always consistent, no matter which location you visit. After a quick Google search, not only did we find out that the veggie burger is one of the more popular items on the menu, selling hundreds a week, but there are a lot of people out there who've tried to replicate the recipe. It's that good, even for us strict carnivores.
