LA Beer Week, which takes place over almost two weeks this month (Sept. 20-30). In addition to special tastings, tap takeovers and dinners, there are several one-off events that we think sound pretty cool. Here are our picks from the calendar so far.
Saturday, Sept. 22: The Better Weather Festival
Celebrate Golden Road Brewing's first anniversary with an array of craft brews, including the release of Burning Bush Smoked IPA, food trucks, specials in the Pub and tours of the brewery. Tickets are $30 ($40 at the door) for keepsake glass and five 6-ounce pours. The first 500 people to buy tickets online get a special goodie bag. Noon to 4 PM.
Sunday, Sept. 23: Craft for Crap
Grab a can or bottle of that crap beer you have in the refrigerator, take it to Koreatown's Beer Belly, and exchange it for one of the fine locally made brews served there for just one cent. That's right. A penny and that MGD Lite someone left at your last party.
Monday, Sept. 24: Dogfish Head Ancient Ales Dinner
Little Bear's chef Andre Guerrero created s special five-course menu to go along with Dogfish Head's Ancient Ales. What are Ancient Ales, you ask? Beers that go beyond the 16th century Reinheitsgebot rules of brewing with only hops, barley and water, which means beers brewed with things like chicory, licorice root, maple syrup, honey, raisins and brown sugar. Beers we're pretty used to seeing today, even if they harken back to centuries old techniques. The menu features dishes like wild mushroom bruschetta on zaatar-spiced toast; pan-seared duck breast with saffron risotto; sous vide pork loin with apple-port marmalade; and beer-poached monkfish. You'll get to keep the fancy goblet. Price and time TBA.
Tuesday, Sept. 25: Musical Beer Crawl
Walk, don't crawl, along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park for beer tastings, live music and special deals at local shops, restaurants and venues. Prices vary per location, and your Passport will be the ticket to everything. Download it one week before the event.
Saturday, Sept. 29: Food GPS Beer Float Showdown
Five local chefs team up with five local breweries to create the ultimate beer float. You get to taste them and vote on the best one, and proceeds go to The Pablove Foundation, a local organization that fights childhood cancer. It all goes down at the Pub at Golden Road. Tickets are $35 per person. 2 to 5 PM
Sunday, Sept. 30: LA Beer Week Festival
The week's finale takes place at Union Station, where more than 70 local, regional, national and international craft brews will be available to sip. There will even be a few special to the event. Food trucks will be on hand to soak up all that beer, and since you're at Union Station - go Metro! Tickets are $50 per person and includes unlimited samples and a commemorative glass. Noon to 4 PM.
