The Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Chilaquiles at El Centro

There are a few reasons that Hell's Kitchen Mexican joint El Centro is on our list of neighborhood standbys. We like the vibe - the place is usually packed, but not so crowded that you have to wait for a table. The gigantic margaritas and sidewalk seating also are a draw. But our favorite thing about the affordable eatery has to be the chilaquiles. The joint dishes out a wide variety of the tortilla casseroles - the one thing that the shrimp, fish, chicken and veggie varieties all have in common is that they are gut bombs. The corn chips are smothered in crema fresca, pico and queso blanco. Drool.

If you do want to get your gorge on, we suggest you skip the gratis basket of chips that lands on your table soon after you place your order. Or try to. On a recent visit, we finally asked the server to take it away when all but five bites remained. Whoops.
