Cupcake Wars victor Andrea Ballus (pictured above, center) has finally brought her award-winning sweets-cupcakes, macarons, ice cream sandwiches and more to San Francisco city soil. She already runs three popular NorCal branches of her Sift Cupcake & Dessert Bar (in Santa Rosa, Cotati, and Napa) but her new Upper Fillmore perch (which opened today) means she's now playing with the big girls (Kara's, Miette, Mission Minis, Sprinkles...). We had a chance to swing by the shop today which was all pretty and done up with cotton-candy colored boxes, Shabby Chic-like chandelier, pastel metal stools, polka dot wallpaper and Eat Cupcakes Bitch paraphernalia, along with all the other sugar-obsessed neighbors eager to snag a free Vanill-Ahh cupcake during the open-day giveaway.
The display cases were filled her signature cupcakes including the As-Seen-On-TV Samoa, Pink Champagne and Battle Royale-along with Whoopie cookies, cruffles (think cake pops dipped in chocolate), French-style macarons and frozen ice-cream sandwiches, but the offerings don't stop there. Ballus caters to the deepest, darkest desires we harbor with frosting shots (literally a shot glass of your favorite frosting, served straight up save for a few sprinkles on top) and cake shakes (that's two cupcakes of your liking whirled with milk and ice, then topped with whipped cream) that delivers a day's worth of calories through a straw (it was worth it.)
In a few days, the bakery will add a brew bar component, featuring both French press and pour-over cups of coffee using Sonoma-based Flying Goat beans. Because after you crash from all that sugar, you're gonna need it.
Sift Cupcake & Dessert Bar: 2411 California St; 415-580-3030, open daily from 10 AM-10:30 PM, expanding to 7 AM-10:30 PM starting next week.
