|Taste Labor Day weekend|
It's just another Meatless Monday (whoa-oh-oh), and if you happen to be looking for faux meat sandwiches, soups and salads Downtown, you're in luck. Localita and the Badasserie, an offshoot of Hollywood's Locali healthy and eco-conscious convenience mart, opened a few weeks ago. It's in a sliver of a space near FiDM, with just enough room for a quick bite there or grab-and-go. And there's coffee. "No mochas, lattes nor fillagree patterns made out of foam milk. Just good, strong, organic, fair direct trade, shade grown coffee," according to the website. And if you don't have time to step out, text in your order to 213-810-7359, and they'll bike it to you (817 S. Los Angeles St.; 213-623-3223).
This is the last Tuesday to get your free Greek yogurt froyo at Pinkberry from 8 to 10 AM. The deal is only good at Santa Monica (1456 3rd St. Promenade), Marina Del Rey (4708-1/2 Admiralty Way), Century City (10250 Santa Monica Blvd.) and South Beverly (240 S. Beverly Dr.).
The last Wednesday of every August, the town of Buñol in Valencia, Spain holds a celebratory tomato festival which basically amounts to a huge food fight. And A.O.C. wants in on the action, sans flying tomatoes. A special all-tomato menu is available tonight, which includes dishes like crab-stuffed tomatoes, wood-fired wild striped bass with tomato rice, veal meatballs with tomato confit, and even candied tomatoes for dessert. Cost is $50 per person (8022 W. Third St.; 323-653-6359).
Every Thursday night Huckleberry offers a family-style menu for dinner from 6 to 9 PM. This week you'll get marinated olives, Tutti Frutti heirloom tomato salad, crab and seafood pot with a fresh-baked baguette, sauteed spinach, and strawberry shortcake. What a way to say goodbye to summer. $30 per person, kinds 12 and under $15, kids 5 and under eat for free. Walk-ins only (1014 Wilshire Blvd.; 310-451-2311).
Looking at the wacky American Food Holiday calendar, today, August 31, has been designated Eat Outside Day. So find a patio, a rooftop, a sidewalk, a curb next to a food truck and nosh. It's your national duty.
The Taste, the Los Angeles Times-sponsored gorge weekend, kicks off today, filling the weekend with an array of events at the Paramount backlot. There's a farmers market-friendly day and cocktails party at night, a Taste of LA and beer bash, and a Sunday picnic. Choose one or hit them all. It's a holiday weekend, after all. All events are $65 per person.
Add this to LA's current sausgefest: Every Sunday, chef Roger Hayot creates a variety of sausage specialties at Marina del Rey's J. Nichols Kitchen, and everything's priced under $10. There's chicken sausage sandwiches with apples and caramelized onions, Asian duck sausages with fried jasmine rice, and chorizo posole with corn tortillas, among the offerings. Beers are $5 or less, too. Bam. (4375 Glencoe Ave.; 310-823-2283)
