|LAFW kicks off this week|
Caroline Styne loves rose wines, and she's chosen five of her personal favorites for the Tavern Wine & Cheese Club tonight. Sip five summery pink wines from California and France alongside cheese courses like watermelon salad with mint and feta, and Lucifero blue cheese with heirloom tomatoes. 7 PM in the Larder; $29 per person (11648 W. San Vicente Blvd.; 310-806-6464).
So you want to be a mixologist? Take the Cocktail Crafting class tonight with the Institute of Domestic Technology and Oldfield's Liquor Room's Aaron Stepka. You'll learn how to make bitters from herbs, flowers and roots, and even bottle it to take home, and also infuse different spirits with fruits and other ingredients. And then Stepka shows you what to do with it all (i.e. make a cocktail and drink it). The class takes place in a "secret speakeasy" hidden in the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Starts at 7 PM; $95 for BevHills residents or $119 for everyone else. Register here (905 Loma Vista Dr.; 310-285-6830).
Since this is a big farmers market day for a lot of chefs, it's a great day to dine out. Check out the Wednesday summer market menu at Josie in Santa Monica (three courses, $39 per person), where Josie LeBalch serves dishes like Weiser Farm melons and prosciutto, and grass-fed beef with Weiser potatoes and green and yellow beans. At Patina downtown chef Charles Olalia's three- or four-course menu might feature something like summer squash risotto and peach melba ($49 or $59, respectively). Check out this week's menu here.
Los Angeles Food & Wine kicks off tonight. If you haven't narrowed down which events to attend - the Night Market, Italian Fiesta, Champagne and Caviar, Lexus Live on the Plaza - here are five picks, plus a few more for the Santa Monica set.
If there's anything a Friday needs it's a boozy milkshake, which Sadie is known for. But there are also a slew of summery cocktails made with blueberries and blackberries and stone fruits. See, you get your vitamins and daily gin quotient all in one (1638 N. Las Palmas Ave.; 323-467-0200)
Susiecakes celebrates the Dog Days of Summer all month by giving away free cupcakes. Help support the pooches in need by bringing new dog toys, treats, blankets, food, beds and leashes to any one of the bakery locations, and you'll receive two-for-one cupcakes for each item (limit two dozen cupcakes). Go here for more details.
End the weekend with some meat. The annual Lucques rib fest takes place today, a full down-home feast of Saint Louis-style pork ribs, braised beef ribs, spicy lamb spare ribs, and chicken wings; plus sides like cole slaw, baked beans, collard greens and Wonder bread. Noon to 9 PM; $55 per person (8474 Melrose Ave.; 323-655-6277).
