Lolinda Now Open in the Mission

It’s time to consider moving to the Mission, or at least closer to a BART stop, as the already trendy neighborhood is alit with a slew of new dining and nightlife spots. The latest, which offers night owls solutions for both, is Lolinda, a hip new late-night wood-fired grill-centric Argentinean steakhouse and small-plates hangout from the Beretta and Starbelly team, now open on Mission St.

The Look: The massive tri-level hang (formerly home to Medjool) is a dark, candlelit space filled with two levels of dining, two full bars and seating for 220 people divided in a mix of booths, tables, communal tables and bar stools. The focal point of the room is a 32-foot wide by eight-foot tall hand-painted mural (shown above) featuring a herd of bulls that was designed by local artist Shawn Feeney. The infamous rooftop terrace and bar will be open this fall.

The Food: As we reported earlier, the menu at Lolinda features mid-priced eats inspired by Latin America, Spain and Argentina that reflects California sensibilities, with whole-animal utilization and sustainable meats, much of which is proffered in smaller shareable portions. It’s a carnivore’s delight with over seven different types of grass-fed, grain finished beef cuts (ranging from short ribs to blood sausage), but additional options include two types of ceviche and a handful of vegetarian offerings such as a pastel de choclo (squash, onions, raisins, and olives, cooked in a corn crust) and platano al horno (ripe plantains with queso fresco, and jicama salsa).

The Drinks: If there’s one thing you can count on from the Beretta team is an ace bar program and indeed the space is outfitted with two cocktail bars where mixologists ply trendsters with artisanal cocktails, piscos, tequilas as well as an affordably priced wine list primarily focused on lesser-known varietals from Portugal, Spain, Chile, and Argentina including sherry and port and 20 options available by the glass. Rounding out the offerings is a compact yet stellar selection of European and South American beers curated by master cicerone Rich Higgins.
