We just caught Mark Gold discussing his buzzy new 'no cellphone' discount at Eva, and it turns out people like it. He told Marketplace on KPCC today that about 40 percent of his customers have already taken advantage of the offer, that if they turn in their cellphone at the hostess stand, they will get 5 percent of their total bill. But it wasn't because people were snapping photos or Tweeting at the table, it was because too many people just wouldn't put them down and pay attention to where they were - having dinner with friends, family or loved ones. And the chef himself was not immune. "I think that's part of the reason why I chose to do something like this," he said. "I see myself with my children at the dinner table checking to see who's called or text messaged. So for me, it's about connecting with my family again and my kids, we're very close and I just want to do the same thing for everyone."
Could you let your phone out of your possession for longer than an hour? Is 5 percent (doesn't even cover tax) enough incentive? Let us know your thoughts in comments!
