Beauty's Bagel Shop Hawks Montreal-Style Wood-Fired Bagels in Oakland

By Meesha Halm
As we mentioned yesterday, the humble, poorly understood bagel is experiencing a rebirth here in the Bay Area. Up until now, one of the region's finest vendors, Beauty's Bagel Shop, has only been hawking its wares at Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen in the Mission and at various food festivals. That all changed over the weekend with the opening of its first brick-and-mortar shop in Oakland's Temescal district.

Part bagelry, part appetizing shop (which sells the schmears and fixings to go on top of said bagels) and part Left Coast cafe, Beauty's Bagel Shop sells everything you need for that perfect bagel meal: Jewish classics such as chopped liver, smoked fish, lox and organic cream cheese along with plenty of California-y toppings such as honey butter, vegetarian pâté, roasted mushrooms and toasted sunflower seeds. But what sets apart Beauty's are the bagels themselves. Following in his family's lineage, co-founder Blake Joffe (a Philly native with Montreal heritage) prepares the hand-rolled beauties according to Montreal fashion: boiled in a honey-water mixture and then baked in a wood-fired oven, resulting in a bagel that is soft in texture with a crunchy crust, a slight sweetness and a hint of smoke.

The bagels are prepared with all organic ingredients and in small batches throughout the day. In addition to the bagel sandwiches, the shop serves soup, salad, a pickle plate and deviled eggs. Carb it to the max by capping it off with a freshly baked sticky bun and a cup of espresso from Healdsburg's Flying Goat Coffee or a good old-fashioned egg cream. (See the complete menu offerings.) It's all available to-go or at one of the custom built communal tables or window counter seats in the homey looking storefront which conjures up the owners' East Coast roots with an exposed brick wall and reclaimed wood wainscoting.

Beauty's Bagel Shop: 3838 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, 510-788-6098. To start, Beauty's will be open Tuesday-Friday from 7 AM-6 PM and weekends from 8 AM-3 PM. Take note however, the bagels ran out fast and furiously on opening day.
