The pork sandwich at Rocket Pig
Ice cream and gazpacho may be more associated with dining in the warm months, but 2012 has been the summer of the sandwich in New York City. There are numerous new options being offered between the bread - from gooey grilled cheeses to a 'wich selection that packs a boozy wallop. Click through the slideshow to see our picks for the sandwiches that you have to try. Though usually enjoyed around noon, we think the slew of new offerings justifies chowing down on these for three meals a day.

  1. Rocket Pig's Smoked Pork Sandwich looks unbelievable. I will definitely be trying that one. I'm surprised nothing from BK made the list.

  2. At this point, I've tried three of these places- Rocket Pig, Mile End Sandwich (Manhattan), and HBH Gourmet- and was delighted with all of them. My favorite sandwich so far was at HBH (by the way they do not have the lamb shoulder sandwich mentioned in the Zagat article). My choice was the "Smith St Cheese Steak" which was made with braised short rib on an onion cibata roll. It was packed with flavor and while it may not meet the traditional definition of a cheese steak, it is one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. It's so exciting to see all of these creative new sandwich places! Keep them coming New York!
