Trend Alert: St. Tropez-Inspired NYC Restaurants

Saint Tropez
On our recent travels through new restaurants on the NYC scene, we may as well have flown our private jet to a town on the French Rivera rather than taken the sweaty Subway to the Village. At least that's how a slew of new eateries are trying to make you feel - Saint Tropez has been the most-cited influence when we've talked to owners about the inspiration behind their establishments. Daniel and David Koch said they'd like to have folks sip on rose, Tropez-style in their Meatpacking District eatery Toy while the folks at the nearby Bagatelle promised a relaxed vibe that would rival summer in the French city. The Hotel Americao thinks the rooftop pool at La Piscine makes them Tropez-worthy, while the sprawling new La Marina cites the Mediterranean breezes as inspiration for their open-air design facing the Hudson.

We like this trend because we like the sun-kissed style and fashionable crowds that fit with the theme. We don't like it because, as far as we understand, you have to be a multi-bazillionaire to really enjoy St. Tropez proper. We think we're going to have to have a glass of rose and figure out how we feel about this one.
