When a new restaurant has an entire section of its menu devoted to "parms," you know you're treading into comfort food territory. Galli (plural for "gallo," which means rooster in Italian) is gearing up to open in SoHo later this week, and the restaurant will dish out a selection of chicken, meatball and veal parm, along with a wide variety of pastas including classics like bolognese and modern offerings like whole wheat spaghetti with escarole, cannellini beans, cherry tomatoes and a garlic oil brodino.
The room is rustic and modern at the same time. High ceilings, exposed brick an Italian marble bar keep things real, while flourishes like a pink neon sign that says "this way," contemporary artwork and a sizable glass roof up the chic quotient. The wine list features 40 vinos and house-infused spirits are worked into the list of cocktails. Those of you sick of your local coffee chain can stop by in the AM for cafe service, coffee and pastries. The restaurant is scheduled to open later this week (45 Mercer St.).
