Plugged In: Chicago Eatery Will Have Outlets for All, Should Everyone?

Should this be a common sight at restaurants?
By James Mulcahy
There's a massive new restaurant coming to Chicago's Michigan Avenue this August dubbed Chuck's Manufacturing but it isn't the promised 150 varieties of vodka that are making us drool. It's this statement from one of their press releases: "While dining, recharge the mind, mobile and computer at outlet stations available at most seats throughout the restaurant and bar."

OK, you might not want a service like this at a high-end dining establishment, but at a casual haunt? Yes, please. We can't count how many times we've asked a bartender to plug our phone in. Yep, it's annoying for us, but even more annoying for them when they have to avoid the snaking cord when they make our drinks. And that's when we have a cord - how many times has our phone been on the final bar when we regretfully look back at that moment in the morning where we thought of taking the wire but didn't. Not to worry at this joint - check it out: "Don’t have your charger? Not to worry, charger loans are available for Blackberry, iPhone or Android model smart phones." Yesssss!

We've been waiting for a restaurant to do something like this - it seems inevitable that others will follow suit. What do you think - is this a great addition for diners whose phones are petering out or just another distraction? Either way, we can't wait to see all the Instagramed photos of phones plugged in at the tables. Let us know what you think in the comments.

  1. Think this is a great idea!

  2. I think it is incredibly annoying and speaks volumes about the state of dining in this country - we are more focused on technology (aka ignoring our dining partners) than we are on having a great experience. It also seems to me that there are some real problems with the rest of the restaurant experience if this is their schtic...and who really needs 150 flavors of vodka?

  3. Most annoying thing ever - going to a nice restaurant and seeing everyone texting and not paying attention to their dining partners or their meal! Bad idea to encourage this. So super lame.

  4. Phones and computers plugged in at every table? Sounds like a thiefs wet dream. Should be easy to snatch some electronic item that someone isn't paying attention to as they are left laying about the restaurant. Why not just put a pawn shop next door for convenient selling once easily stolen?
