Open Call: What Are Your Most Awkward Dining Moments?

Like so many things in life, dining out is filled with awkward moments - like when the server comes by to ask you: "how is everything tasting?" and you wouldn't dare be honest. Or worst of all - when a server spills a tray full of red wine glasses right in your lap and you have to sit through the rest of your meal uncomfortably drenched in booze. Um...awkward! What are your most awkward dining stories/moments? Shout 'em out in the comments or email kdobkin@zagat.com for a chance to see them featured in an upcoming article.

  1. When the server crouches down to take your order. Hate that!

  2. Was told once by an owner/front of house/server from Canada and working in the UK what she's observed people from different countries as far as clearing plates away after a meal finishes. Americans apparently like them taken away quickly (hence in the US on more than one occasion had plates taken from some people before the others were done - as an American, though, I hate that) while Europeans don't like that - wait till everyone's done. Would be interesting to find out other countries' preferences! Also hate being asked for my order too soon after I've been given a menu.

  3. Rule: wait until all are done.
Exception: If a customer has pushed his/her plate away, remove it (and if there's food left, check to see if anything was amiss)

  4. What a disappointing article. Your audience for this seems to be a sheltered, timid group. No need to be a jerk, but for pity's sake speak up... make eye contact, speak calmly and use your "I's": "I would prefer you not crouch by me please" "I am sure you'll ask the manager to take care of my dry cleaning" "I haven't finished yet". To the manager "I noticed a server who didn't wash his/her hands after using the bathroom. I am concerned about that". Get a clue!
