The New, Downsized Taste of Chicago Kicks-Off Tomorrow

After a string of incidents, including a nearby shooting in 2008 and two stabbings in 2010, on top of budgetary concerns and low attendance that almost ceased the festival for good last year - the fate of the Taste of Chicago is on shaky grounds.

Starting tomorrow (later than usual to avoid the Fourth of July chaos), the five-day festival reduced the number of vendors but kept the same amount of security. Organizers also charged for tickets to the daily concerts that include Jennifer Hudson, Death Cab for Cutie, Michael Franti, Chaka Kahn and Dierks Bentley.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, advanced ticket sales closed yesterday with only half of all tickets sold. Remaining tickets to the Petrillo Music Shell will be available at the festival and lawn seats will be free.

The event will run through Sunday with vendors such as Eli’s Cheesecake, Harold’s Chicken, Texas de Brazil and The Smoke Daddy. More notable offerings were limited to celebrity “Chef de Jour” lunches and dinners (all of which have sold out except for Jimmy Bannos’) and pop-up restaurants around Chicago during the duration of the fest at Tre Kroner, Karyn’s on Green and 13 others.

Only one questions remains: with the possible success or failure of the thirty-year-strong fest dependent on this year’s Taste, will you go?
