5 Bastille Day Celebrations in DC

L'Enfant Cafe will be hosting its annual Maid Race.
In celebration of Bastille Day, DC's French chefs and restaurateurs will honor their heritage with festivities, happily involving lots to eat and drink.  Here are some highlights.

July 13: The French Embassy will host an evening of food, drink, music and dancing, with a buffet dinner prepared by more than a dozen top restaurants including Bistro La Bonne, Citronelle and Ris (4101 Reservoir Road, NW; 7 PM - midnight; $100; get tickets).

July 13-15: Mintwood Place’s chef Cedric Maupillier will feature specials from his native France, like gougeres, soupe au pistou and moule mariniere, in addition to the Gallic staples like steak frites that are on the regular menu at this Adams Morgan arrival. New French-inspired cocktails, like champagne spiked with Calvados, will enliven the evenings (202-234-6732).

July 14: Bastille will showcase the diverse culinary traditions of modern France in a three-course menu for $29 at its Old Town bistro. Among the featured dishes are grilled whole sardines with ratatouille, lamb chops with merguez and harissa, steak frites and a vegetable tajine with couscous. Expect celebratory decor and traditional music to set the mood (noon-9:30 PM; 703-519-3776).

July 14: Central invites oenophiles to storm its wine list with all French bottles sold at 15% off the list price. There will be interactive wine games with a revolutionary theme, as well as Gallic specials added to the regular menu, and live jazz (5-11 PM; 202-626-0015).

July 14: L’Enfant CafĂ©’s annual Bastille Day party will feature a hilarious French Maid race where contestants dress up in the traditional short skirt and white apron dress and run back and forth to fill a champagne glass with soup spoons of water from a distant bucket, followed by a Masquerade Ball/Block Party with a DJ. The restaurant will be serving food specials and offering door prizes. Doors open 4 PM, race is at 8 PM and dancing ends at 11 PM. A block party happens on Vernon Street NW between 18th & 19th Streets. NW ($5 entrance fee for party and dancing; $25 to participate in the race for up to 40 competitors; 202-319-1800).
