Crazy Wine Pairings Abound at The Colonial, Opening Tonight

Taking over the former TiroVino (All'Angelo before that) space on Melrose is the new Italian-focused wine bar-restaurant, The Colonial, making its official debut tonight. The players: Carolyn and Mary Anne Reyes, who ran Hollywood's former Mandalay Restaurant and The Pearl Cocktail Lounge, and sommelier David Haskell, who once owned WeHo's Bin 8945 and hopped around different spots around LA after that closed. A chef change occurred before the doors even opened - it's now Pippa Calland, who opened Villetta in Brentwood.

The space is pretty cozy, with a long bar taking up one side of the room and banquettes facing it. Save for the few tables with high, plush chairs towards the back, it almost looks like the old Bin 8945 set up, only bigger. Calland's menu looks vaguely Villetta-esque with small plates for sharing, a few flatbreads and larger items like roasted Jidori chicken with sweet corn polenta. Haskell has a bunch of reserve wines on hand, plus esoteric picks for pairings, which is his forte. Think: Croque madame with smoked beer. Check out the menu after the jump.

Toasted pita served with white bean hummus, tzatziki and harissa
Devilled eggs with pickled jalapenos, smoked paprika and greens
Baby lettuce salad with radishes, vine-ripened cherry tomatoes and creamy buttermilk dressing
Arugula salad with grilled squid and chorizo
Nasturtium salad with rabbit confit and black pepper
Herbed frites
Rigatoni with butter and cheese

Mushroom, manchego and Serrano ham
Heirloom tomato, mozzarella & basil
Eggplant, bucherone and tapenade

MAIN COURSES
Lamb burger with harissa aoli & herb frites
"The Colonial" croque with Serrano ham, piperade, fontina and sunny side up egg
Pan-roasted bone-in Jidori chicken breast with sweet corn polenta
Dry-aged KC strip steak tagliata with watercress and herbed frites
Roasted cod and Manila clams with Romesco sauce
Farmers market vegetable plate with roasted eggplant, white beans, sweet corn & braised Swiss chard
Half rigatoni with sausage, peas & cream (gluten free pasta available)
