Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Animal's Quail Fry

Here's a little story about some damn fine fried bird. When Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook opened Son of a Gun, Dotolo told us he was taking one of our favorite dishes at Animal off of the menu: the quail fry. He said they didn't it to compete with the fried chicken sandwich at the new sibling restaurant. We were crushed. We're not saying we haven't gone to the Fairfax restaurant because it was off the menu, but our visits have decreased exponentially. So last week we caught Dotolo Instagramming (@animalvinny) that the quail fry is back on the menu. Last night, we had our first taste in years of the dreamy, crispy, juicy buttermilk fried quail, the grits, the greens, the slab bacon, the maple jus. Holy yes, it is one perfect dish. Of course we had poutine and pork belly sliders and a wonderful melon salad with Dungeness crab and purslane. But that quail? Like a beacon calling us home.
