Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Agnolotti at Barra

While the creative pizza menu has followed East Passyunk’s Birra to its uptown sibling, newly opened Barra offers an expanded selection of other types of plates and pastas. We had a chance to sample several over the weekend, and the non-pie options are good enough to elevate the Old City dining room beyond a simple pizzeria. Especially enjoyable was the agnolotti - thin housemade pasta stuffed with English peas - the fresh veggie filling adding a green sheen to the crimped rectangles. The earthy flavor of truffles in the mix grounded each bite, while textural contrast came from caramelized shallots with a slight crunch. The dish is rounded out by a sweet vin santo broth that was good enough to drink from the serving bowl, and though we didn’t take a photo to prove it, that’s exactly what we did ($16; 215-238-9983).
