BBQ With an Asian Influence at Dragon Ranch, Now Open in River North

Continuing their quest to dominate eating and drinking in north Chicago, Rockit Ranch opened its fifth restaurant, Dragon Ranch Moonshine & BBQ, last week.

Specializing in BBQ with an Asian twist, dishes such as the bahn mi sandwich can be ordered with rotisserie chicken, house smoked pulled pork or chopped brisket. That same fall-apart meat can be prepared in steamed buns or on a sweet potato roll.

As the name suggests, in addition to BBQ offerings, there is an impressive selection of moonshine, including several locally distilled at Koval and FEW. They will soon boast a house brand of moonshine, a 92 proof variety called “White Dragon.” The moonshine is mixed into cocktails served in mason jars and coupe glasses, or served straight up to daring drinkers.

Colorful bottles of moonshine cover shelves on exposed brick walls, in addition to vegetables pickling in mason jars and kitschy artwork that looks as if it had been pulled off the streets of Japan. Communal tables and bar seating surround the open kitchen for an up-close view of spare rib slicing.

Savory sides of gooey mac ’n’ cheese made with housemade pasta, roasted sweet potato hash and glazed carrots are on the menu along side sweet dessert options such as s’mores and milk ’n’ cookies.

All signs point to Dragon Ranch being a saucy success and delicious addition to Rockit Bar & Grill, The Underground, Sunda and Rockit Burger Bar in the Rockit Ranch family.
