Why is tomato pie so prevalent throughout South Philadelphia? “All the best Italian bakers came off the boat and settled here!” jokes Joe Cacia, second-generation owner of one of the oldest bakeries in the city, which now sports five locations throughout the region. Whatever the reason, in many neighborhoods, it’s easier to snag a square of tomato pie - essentially pizza without cheese - than it is to find a regular slice. Here are four fine specimens to search out for a light bite.
