Look out Off the Grid. There’s a new street-food sensation in town, and this one is staying put. Behold the SoMa StrEAT Food Park, a new permanent food-truck pod, inspired by similar ventures in Portland, that opened last Friday in an out-of-the-way SoMa corner spot (though conveniently located near Costco).
Unlike at some of your usual vendy powwows where you have to cop a squat on the street or at a nearby park bench, this venture boasts a covered heated seating area for 100, bathrooms, bike parking, free WiFi and a projection system for showing movies and games. The pod will start by hosting a rotating slate of up to 10 food trucks at lunch (11 AM-3 PM), but come this Wednesday, they’ll be adding dinner service.
The eventual plan is to add a beer garden to the site as well, but the owners are still waiting on the ABC/liquor license. Check the Twitter account @SoMaStrEatFood to see a list of the daily food trucks. The official grand-opening dinner party will be held this Wednesday, June 6, but ScoutMob is selling tickets for a preview dinner event on Tuesday, June 5.
