Pulpo Arms its Way into Cleveland Park
Pulpo, a mid-priced, Spanish-accented tapas place recently opened in the former Tackle Box Cleveland Park location. Business was a bit slow before the liquor license arrived last weekend. Now the neighborhood seems pleased to find another popular cuisine represented on its restaurant row.
The Food: Yes, octopus is on a menu that offers takes on Iberian wine bar classics. But so are trendy diversions like bone marrow, beef tartar and mini burgers. An ambitious kitchen plans to foray into molecular gastronomy, but so far things look and taste pretty much as expected.
The Setting: Industrial grunge rules the lofty, distressed brick, exposed ceiling, and concrete floored space. There’s an eating balcony, above the open kitchen, towards the rear. Soon a giant octopus will swim in a fish tank behind the long bar. Now there’s just a graphic image on the opposite wall.
The Drinks: Spain inspires the cocktails as well as much of the food. Passion fruit and watermelon juice are featured in specialty cocktails. Pitchers of red, white or pink sangria and the house ginger margarita are likely to be popular during DC’s hot summer days. There are draft craft as well as bottled Mexican beers.
