| Pizza at Totonno's |
New York City is full of pizza joints - from high-end eateries that offer pies from wood-fired ovens to slice shops where you can gorge on $.99 slices (preferably after spending a little to much time at your neighborhood bar). With such a crazy variety, it's really hard to say which is best. Well, below you'll find the top eight NYC pizzas from our
2012 New York City Restaurants guide. The list shows Brooklyn is by far the dominant borough - five of the eight are located there, with two in Manhattan and another in Staten Island. Once you're done scoping the results, be sure to vote for your favorite pizza joint in our NYC Everyday Eats survey,
which is live right here.

Lucali's is better than Difara's? Come on....
ReplyDeleteHuh? I must be missing something. Is that cost per person? so, it costs from $80 to $250 for a family of four to eat PIZZA??? Even if it's per pie, it's STILL ridiculous! And what's up with #3, Di Fara? It costs a whopping $1367!!!!!! Do I get a free 65" flat screen TV with that?
ReplyDelete$18. 1367 is the telephone #
Deletewhere did you see the list?
DeleteRather than launching a tirade, wouldn't it be more reasonable to assume a $1300 pizza price is an error rather than truth?
DeleteFixed! Thanks for catching, but if you do want to spend way too much on pizza, you can score one for $1,000 here. Not quite $1,300, but in the ballpark:

Where is the list of the top 8...don't see it.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't a list to be seen here...where is it?

ReplyDeleteI cannot find any list!
ReplyDeleteI love both Di Fara and Totonno's - both great pizza, but there is no comparison. Di Fara is simply the best pizza I have ever had, anywhere, anytime. It is a quantum leap over anything else.
ReplyDeleteDi Fara's-Not really. Especially at his price per slice. His pizza's soggy, oily and over-rated.
DeleteI only buy by the pie. The pizza has a lot of olive oil, but many, including myself don't mind that style. It is a style issue, not a flaw. As for the flavors - the combination of cheeses and the sauce are vastly superior at Di Fara, as are the toppings. I also grant you it is not a super-crisp style, but the crust for the fresh pies out of the oven are not soggy at all - it just isn't that ultra-thin style. There is nothing overrated about the pies here. I've eaten at most of the major places in NYC (SI excluded, sadly) multiple times, the top places in New Haven (Sally's, Frank Pepe). Nothing comes close to the complexity and depth of Dom's pies. As I said, I love Totonno's but Di Fara is at the top, all by itself.
DeleteL&B Spumoni Gardens puts all of these places to shame
ReplyDeleteL&B is awesome!
DeleteI've eaten at L&B multiple times. Their regular slices are mediocre. I am not a fan of the 'square' style, but I did like the ones there OK. Overall, not impressive.
DeleteYeah, where's L&B Spumoni Gardens??
ReplyDeleteIt's in the armpit of Brooklyn, with their raw pizza...
DeleteHow could Grimaldi's not be in the top 8?
ReplyDeleteIt's more touristy and tasty.
DeleteAny list without New City Pizza is bogus !!!
ReplyDeleteReader must have meant NEW PARK PIZZA !!! its the best !!!
ReplyDeleteBilly Destro says this list is a good start. I'm tired of seeing the same names, over and over again, especially if their pizza has become below average. L&B is a perfect example; their pizza has become a raw ball of dough with a burnt exterior. Grimaldi's isn't as good as it's name has made it out either. DiFara could be a good pizza if he cleaned up his hole-in-the-wall place and got a brick oven. Franny's keeps making the list claiming "fresh" ingredients-- EVERY place should use fresh ingredients, that's not a reason to make a top list! I hope the readers will come up with some new, quality places that have great pizza and start building our NEW top pizza list.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Billy Destro! There's a Peppino's in Park Slope with a brick oven that makes GREAT pizza, and they are never on any list. I think having a brick oven is a MUST for top pizzas. Everyone knows they make the best bread from brick, not steel.
DeleteI cannot believe Lombardi's on Soring Sr. isn't listed. Even though there is generally a wait the crust and especially the sauce are the best!
ReplyDeleteOverall, I would say that Lombardi's is past its prime and costing on its reputation. I've eaten there twice, and both times the pies have been decent, but not exceptional. I have read reviews from people I respect, who have eaten there in the last few years who have had exceptional pies. So either they are very inconsistent, or they are paying more attention to reviewers they need to pay attention to.
Deleteoops..that is Lombardi's on Spring ST.!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFor those that cannot "see the list": Its a slide show. Hit the "next" button on the upper right hand corner of the photo.
ReplyDeleteI went to Franny's once and will NEVER go back! Too much attitude from the waiters, you're rushed and the tables are tiny and squished together. Plus, the pizza is EXPENSIVE and SMALL!! Give me Best Pizza or DiFara's any day of the week. The wait may be interminable at DiFara's but it is simply the best pizza anywhere. And Best is just great, with no attitude.
ReplyDeleteThe pizza at Franny's is not special at all. Some of their other food is pretty damn good, but the pizza is just meh.
DeleteDi Fara's is Art, it is Unique, it is so handmade and made with love that swooning is all you can do, drown in that pie!
ReplyDeleteYou mean "drown in that oil!"
ReplyDeleteI understand he wants to top it with some olive oil, but a slice isn't supposed to be THAT saturated. It should be able to be eaten without a cup of liquid falling out of it before you reach the crust.

ReplyDeleteCan this list of NYC pizzerias be correct? How can Lombardi's not be on the list? It seems that most of these places on the list are "gourmet" pizzerias.
ReplyDeleteBig Pizza fan and me and my wife are always in the lookout for a great pizza. We went to Numero 28, as it was highly recommended here. What a bad experience, cold pizza, extremely chewy, we had to stop eating it as it was not good. Service was not great, it was slow, and the price too high for what we were getting. Not recommended. One place that I have never heard mention around the interwebs is Adrienne’s Pizza Bar in Stone Street in the Financial District. Pizza without beer? Bah!!!!
ReplyDeletei'm using google chrome and can't see any lists, here or in the best austin restaurants
