James Beard Foundation Announces Puerto Rico Now Award-Eligible

Some significant changes were just announced in the regional Best Chef categories for the 2013 James Beard Awards - now chefs in Puerto Rico will be able to vie for the "Best Chef South" award along with chefs from Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Additionally the "Best Chef Pacific" category will change to "Best Chef West" and will include California, Hawaii and Nevada, the latter of which was previously a part of the "Best Chef Southwest" region. The change was made to accomodate the growing population of the Southwest region. Stay tuned for more JBA updates right here.

  1. Puerto Rico is a Latin American country, forcefully annexed to the US. None of its cultural traits deserve to be lumped up to any region of the US, and that includes its food. This is an abomination.

    1. We're talking about the culinary arts here. Why do you want to mix it with the unappetizing world of politics.

Puerto Rico can claim some very talented chefs among its locals and ex-pats and it is indeed a fine thing for James Beard to include their artistry among the leading lights of the food world. Try to get over yourself.

    2. THE JAMES BEARD ASSOCIATION AWARD IS AN HONOR BESTOWED ON FEW.PUERTO RICO IS NOT A LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRY, IT WAS CONQUERED BY THE SPANISH AND INVADED BY MANY EUROPEANS THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES.IT HAS ENJOYED THE HONOR OF AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP SINCE 1917.
AUTONOMY IS NOT SOMETHING PUERTO RICO CAN SEEM TO ACHIEVE ON IT'S OWN;ENJOY THE BENEFITS AND THE AWARD.

  3. that's strange since Puerto Rico is the Caribbean and not the South. It's nice to give them a shot but it is odd given Puerto Rico's colonial status.
