A Glimmer of Hope for California Foie Gras?

As the deadline to the foie gras ban grows neigh, the feeding frenzy continues. But while most diners seemed resigned to enjoying the last day of foie consumption, stuffing themselves silly gavage-style with the livery delicacy, a report today out of the Sacramento Bee suggests a glimmer of hope is on the horizon.


Yes, the current ban will still go into effect on July 1, but it looks like foie gras advocates have found a supportive senator who might be willing to sponsor a repeal of the law. According to The Sacramento Bee, Davis Democratic Senator Lois Wolk, who voted against the ban when she served in the Assembly, said that she's considering authoring legislation in the 2013 session to repeal the ban. She goes on to explain, "I don't like single-product bans, period. These are never easy issues, usually characterized by a lot of intense feeling and not much fact. The chefs have been very open in how to approach this, and now we have a chance to look at this."

Of course any repeal would face opposition and in 10 days, it's definitely game over - at least for a while - to dine out (legally) on foie gras.
