Feast in the Gold Coast Reopens as Cru Café and Wine Bar

Cru first opened in 1998, becoming Feast in 2009, but on Monday, owner Debbie Sharp reopened it in its original space with a vintage-feeling French redesign. (The other location of Feast on North Damen remains open.)

Sharp took a seat at a reclaimed wood table, and within 10 seconds stood up to run across the dining room to greet one of her regular customers. The wine bar had been back operating under its original name for only a day, but the modern white walls with vintage accents fee like they could have been there for years.

Maybe it’s the return of the chandeliers, which spent the last three years in storage while the space operated as Feast’s second location, or the cozy U-shaped bar serving a variety of organic wines, craft beer and classic cocktails that make Sharp feel at home.

She said it was time to return to Cru’s sophisticated roots; the economy improved along with diners’ acceptance of finer dining options. Offerings for lunch and dinner include bar snacks such as pimiento cheese with pepper aïoli on whole wheat; small plates such as lobster served with asparagus and lime mousseline; and mains like duck breast with polenta and grilled broccoli.

Sharp said the menu and restaurant are “what it should have looked like the first time” when Cru originally opened in 1998. Although it took a decade and a half, a concept change and one recession, Cru has found its class.
