A Charitable Garden Pops Up on Walnut Street

For the second year in a row, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has taken a vacant Center City lot and transformed it into a temporary garden, complete with outdoor artwork, growing plots and a communal table. Mayor Michael Nutter will commemorate the opening of this year’s urban oasis - located at 1905-15 Walnut Street - at a ceremony on Friday from noon-1 PM. Chipotle Mexican Grill will provide light refreshments during the celebration, which is open to the public.

The garden will contribute to the the PHS City Harvest program (which provides fresh produce for more than 1,000 families in need each week), and will also host events like gardening classes and cooking workshops. As was the case with last year’s endeavor, area chefs will also use bounty from the raised beds, including sponsor Chipotle, which will tend a special hot-pepper plot. After the launch, the flowering field will be open for visits and events 11AM- 2PM, Tuesday-Friday, as well as 5-7 PM Thursdays and 9 AM-1 PM on the second Saturday of each month. Stay tuned for more event details.
