Best Thing We Ate Yesterday: Ink.Sack's Avocado Melt

By Lesley Balla
To be fair, we ate a lot of amazing food at Taste of the Nation yesterday. Fried chicken. Squid inky fideo (Lazy Ox). Burgers (Umami and Comme Ca). Thai sausage (Night + Market) and blood sausage (Mo-Chica). Deep-fried pastrami sandwiches (Farmshop). The best peanut butter cup ever (Tavern). But one sandwich stood out from the rest: the cheesy avocado melt from Michael Voltaggio's Ink.Sack. Maybe it was the bread - pan de mie from Black Cat Bakery - maybe it was the way the cheese and avocado melted together that made it taste like evil (secret pleasure) Velveeta. Or maybe it was the Fritos sprinkled inside for texture. Actually, we're pretty sure it was the Fritos because they were FRITOS. A deliciously fun entry amidst other haute dishes, and one that is now available at the sandwich shop starting today. Ink.Sack is located at 8360 Melrose Avenue.
