Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Stuffed Squid at Racion

It's always a pleasant surprise finding great food in Pasadena, especially in Old Town. The downtown area has long been known for mediocre restaurants and chains, maybe a few good bars (shout out to Lucky Baldwins). But over the last couple of years, we've seen some standout newcomers - Intelligentsia, Musha, Kings Row, an Umami Burger on the way (going next to Intelligentsia). Now we can add Racion to the list.

The Basque-leaning restaurant tucked away on  Green Street is an intimate, minimalist space with a cute patio on the side. It feels like a hidden gem, and it truly is in the best sense. We popped in for a few small plates, all very tasty. But our favorite was the duck sausage-stuffed squid with inky brava sauce. The sausage was flavorful, the calamari had a slight charred chew, and it was perfect with our (inexpensive) glass of Spanish white. A great dish - and place - to stumble upon.
