The Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Lobster Dumplings at Toy

Play peek-a-boo with some dumplings
Toy, the new restaurant in the Gansevoort Hotel, may have its official opening on Monday, but the eatery has been filled with fashionable folks for the past few nights at the behest of Derek and Daniel Koch, the duo of nightlife impresarios behind the restaurant. In keeping with the name, there are plenty of playful touches throughout the space - guests eat their Asian fare with neon chopsticks, little plastic monkeys adorn the whimsical cocktails and there is a mirrored DJ booth that looks like something out of an '80s New Wave club (the music last night kept with this theme, thank you Flock of Seagulls).

The dishes were equally playful, with shrimp toast made to look like a lit stogie and, one of our favorite bites of the bunch, the "hidden" lobster dumplings that are served underneath an edible, starchy trellis. The club-going crowds that will flock here will surely appreciate such flourishes, and they'll definitely enjoy the sushi menu and oysters that will be served into the wee hours.

Toy officially opens Monday at 18 Ninth Avenue.
