The Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Crab Pot Pie at Silk Rd. Tavern

Last week, we told you that Silk Rd Tavern was gearing up to open in the Chelsea space that used to house Allegretti. This weekend, we decided to stop by and give the eatery a whirl. The Pan-Asian menu is served in a space that has a totally different feel than its white-tableclothed predecessor. There are some pub-height tables in the front of the space that work to create a buzz in the bar area, and the dining room feels casual with brown banquettes and a large circular booth for big parties. We were told the dishes on the menu were meant to share - although the portions seemed a bit small when they were presented, the moderate prices made it easy to order enough for our group to snack on.

Easily the best dish we has was the Singapore chili crab pot pie. Stuffed with generous bites of blue crab along with black beans and veggies, the dish packed the perfect amount of spice. The crust was flaky, the interior was gooey, and the entire thing perfectly encapsulated the restaurant's stated goal of creating cross-cultural, Asian-American comfort food.
