What is the best pizza in the United States? We've scoured our many Restaurant Guides and came up with this - the ultimate list of the top pie shops in 23 U.S. cities. Consider it your coast-to-coast guide of the best pizza throughout the country, and use it to plan your culinary travels. Has anyone out there been to all 23 of these shops? If the answer is yes, we salute you.

No New Haven pizza places made the list? No Pepe's? How can that be?
ReplyDeletePepe's is not what it used to be since it has passed to the grandson and he is making a chain of it. Profits rather than quality. Sally's, Bar, Modern, would be my choices in that order.
DeleteI would agree wholeheartedly. Pepe's is busy making profits while Sally's, Bar, Modern are consistently making great pies. Sally's Clam Casino pie is sublime!
DeleteI recently had the white clam pie at pepe's and I have to say it ranks in the top 5 best pizzas I've ever had.. and this coming from someone who eats pizza for a living
DeleteI have had Pepes in many of the CT locations and they are exactly the same as the New Haven location....same exact ovens to. I see nothing wrong with them growing and quality still has been great. We were at Mohegan Sun last night after a concert and the burnt edges and greasy fingertips brought back memories for me!!

ReplyDeleteUnbelievable that West Hartford made the list and New Haven did not. Unless it's because there were so many good options the writers couldn't pick one, it's impossible.
ReplyDeleteYeah, What's up with leaving New Haven off the list and including W. Hartford? New Haven pizza is truly unique and is renowned by anyone who truly considers themselves a pizza aficionado.

ReplyDeleteAny list of Pizza places in the US that does not include New Haven is not only an embarrassment, but seriously flawed. I have eaten at most of the places on this list and a great many more; and the omission of Pepe's, Sally's and the Spot in New Haven, along with Little Rendezvous in Meriden, CT has to call into question any serious Pie lovers credentials.
ReplyDeleteI guess that is what happens when a bunch of California avocado and pineapple and ham pizza lovers at Google begin rating food they have not clue about. I believe that Zuckerberg eating at McDonald's in Rome is all the evidence one needs to understand this Google, formerly Zagat Pizza rating.
It cannot be correct if Pepe's in New Haven did not make the list.

We have Settebello here in Salt Lake City as well with another location not far away. Along with that, quite a few other well above average places. It's nifty.

ReplyDeleteWhy isn't new haven on the list? Maybe because its not nearly as well known as any of the other cities on the list, and since the list was the best pizza in 23 towns not the 23 best pizzas the list makes perfect sense. Stop bitching morons.
ReplyDeleteI'm from Chicago and i don't know any Chicagoan that eats Chicago pan pizza on a regular basis. Maybe once a year if that. It's a tourist attraction, not something we eat when we want pizza. Chicagoans for the most part eat very thin, very crisp pizza cut into squares. I think if you're going to compare New York Pizza to Chicago Pizza you should really be looking at what we eat not what the tourist think we eat. Compare thin crust to thin crust and you may be surprised by the results. also, north side pizza and south side pizzas are very different. the north side tends to have a great deal of regional chains and the south side has more family owned pizzerias. But please stop comparing New York style to Chicago Pan pizza. They are not comparable.

DeleteYou're right, they're not comparable. New York pizza is the worst, greasiest, overrated, tasteless pizza known to man, while Chicago deep dish has flavor, heartiness, and excellent balance.

ReplyDeletei agree. I wondered the same thing.Pizzera Hianco is consistently rate #1 by experts, but ignored here. They even left Phoenix out, but put in such non pizza cities as Houston, Portland,and San Antonio

ReplyDeleteFrank PEPE'S in New Haven CT. 4 Generations still eat the BEST APIZZA around now living in Florida the only thing I miss PEPE'S first place I go when I visit back to CT. (no good pizza in FL.)

ReplyDeleteThe jackass who just tried to justify omitting New Haven from this list is obviously as clueless as the people who made this list. I have eaten pizza all over, including the yearly latest greatest turnstile that is New York favorite. While New York has many wonderful pies, and Keste is wonderful, there really is not even a discussion. Wether you prefer Pepe's (original location only), Sally's, Modern, or Bar, New Haven is THE pizza capitol of this country hands down. And ANYONE who knows good pizza, knows of New Haven.
ReplyDeleteNo St. Louis-style entries? Granted, I'm a transplant to The Lou and I'm not at all crazy about it -- Provel cheese...you either love it or hate it, and I think it's disgusting -- but the die-hard life-long locals sure are fond of their Imo's, for example. It's a style all its own.

this is a terrible list. Saying Punch Pizza is the best in Minnepaolis is absurd. No one who lives in Minneapolis would agree. No one.

ReplyDeleteNot one mention from Indy, Pittsburgh, or Cleveland? Mineo's pizza in Pittsburgh is Awesome and Martinos Italian Villa in the Burbs of Indy is Great! This is a real joke in my opinion..
ReplyDeleteOsteria in Philly? Seriously? Marras or Taconellis in Philly should have had a mention. If you are coming to Philly check out either place or ask the locals. We take our pizza as seriously as New Yorkers. As for Chicago, Marinos (just outside Chicago in the NW suburbs) is awesome.
ReplyDeleteFinally the U.S. is realizing what real pizza is. You know what I mean if you have ever traveled to Napoli, Italy and tasted that pie of the Gods! Bravo to Cavalli's in the Dallas area. We will see you again this weekend!

Iggies has ok pizza, very high prices, and very rude staff. They attempt to have a casual atmosphere, but they are amazingly uptight about where you can and can't sit. Many have had very bad experiences there. In Baltimore, I would suggest Joe Squared as the best in town.
ReplyDeleteJoe Squared is good, but are you really going to tell me the staff is nice? Iggie's got the vote because they have different toppings making for an interesting night dining out. The most unique at Joe Squared is the Hawaiian pizza! I may be saying this because I live in Mt. Vernon, but bringing your own bottle of wine, or your own six pack, makes for a nice cheap date night with my wife. Last time we went to Joe Squared we got two drinks each and one pizza and it cost us $50. Bring a bottle of wine to Iggie's and you get a pizza, a salad, and a great night for $20.
DeleteThe best pizza and salad bar in the world, is located in Anchorage, AK. A little place called Mooses's Tooth. They also make their own beer!
