The Austin Area's 5 Best Steaks

A good steak in Texas isn't hard to come by, but to find the best of the best, we turn to our recently published Texas Restaurant Guide. Behold the top five steakhouses in the Austin area - if we've missed your favorite joint to grab a slab of meat, let us know in the comments.

Perry's Steakhouse & Grille
Food: 26
Decor: 26
Service: 25
Cost: $55
An “elegant place for business or special occasions”, this chophouse chain is the place to “impress” with “wonderful” steaks, “outstanding” wines and a signature pork chop that’s “not to be missed” (”everything pales next to the pork”); “top-notch” service and “attractive” settings are added perks, but it’s “pretty damn expensive” “unless you’re on an expense account”; P.S. live jazz and piano at most locales.

114 W. Seventh St.; 512-474-6300

Eddie V's Prime Seafood
Food: 26
Decor: 26
Service: 25
Cost: $55
This “vibrant” chophouse chainlet – tied for Most Popular in Austin – “stands out” with “super” steaks and “excellent” “seafood without gimmicks” (”oysters as fresh as if you’d gotten them off the boat”), plus “exemplary” service and “elegant”, “well-appointed” surroundings attracting a “high-rolling” crowd of “wealthy lobbyists and dealmakers”; “you pay dearly” for it all, so many seek out the half-price apps deals during happy hour; look for a “hopping” bar scene too.

301 E. Fifth St.; 512-472-1860

Ruth's Chris Steak House
Food: 26
Decor: 22
Service: 25
Cost: $63
“Always a hit with the expense-account crowd”, this “steadfast” chain “pampers” patrons with “thick”, “buttery” steaks and “top-notch” service in “clubby” surroundings; it all adds up to a “quality” experience, though one with “few surprises, positive or negative.”

107 W. Sixth St.; 512-477-7884

Fogo de Chao
Food: 25
Decor: 23
Service: 26
Cost: $55
“Indulge in pure gluttony” at this Brazilian steakhouse chain, a “celebration of meats” where an endless array of “luscious cuts” “keep on coming” in a “constant stream of skewers” and the “well-stocked salad bar” even makes it “great for vegetarians”; settings are “attractive and comfortable”, but “expect to spend a lot.”

309 E. Third St.; 512-472-0220

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine
Food: 25
Decor: 25
Service: 25
Cost: $56
“They know their meat” at this chop shop chain where “well-aged” steaks and 100 “fabulous” wines by the glass are ferried by a “professional” staff in “clubby” “dark-wood” surroundings so packed “it begs the question – is there really a recession going on?”; “high” prices aside, it “always hits the spot”, though the unconvinced note there’s “nothing here you can’t find anywhere else in Texas.”
