Bay Area's 5 Best BBQ Joints

The Bay Area seems to be on a barbecue bender these days, with newcomers like Cedar Hill and Southpaw getting into the action. But who’s got the fairest ‘cue in the land? To help kick off Barbecue Week, check out the list of top BBQ spots from our guide which you, the reader, helped decide.

Spoiler alert: the top-vote getters aren’t all in the city, a few don’t have permanent addresses, and you won’t find any Oakland old-timers like Everett & Jones either. Discuss.

  1. fyi Bo's isn't in a strip mall, it's along the main drag in Lafayette. Local tip - go early, as they tend to run out of their ribs by the evening. Great foreign beer selection. Nice outdoor deck in the summer.

    1. IMHO, Bo's is for suburban yuppies who have never tasted real Q, plus it ain't very good. It is dry BBQ, which I do not prefer, but is defensible. I would never eat there again.

    2. Exactly! If you have to try to dress it up and give it "airs" it ain't Que! I'll stick with real Que in the hood...where it's GOOD!!!

  2. Info Please: Who served up the grub in the picture at the very top? That's some swoon-worthy mac n cheese but where can I get a fix?

  5. This list doesn't even come close to being the best BBQ in the East Bay. There are a number of far better establishments that serve real low & slow BBQ.

You've really missed the boat on this one.

    1. I agree. Phat Matt's in Oakland, B-Side BBQ, and Great American in Alameda are all contenders. Bo's is good but overpriced.

  6. Way better than Bo's in the East Bay is MaggieRay's BBQ in Alamo.

  7. Three of my favorite places are on the list! I got hooked on The Rib Whip and Southern Sandwiches at the Niner games last fall and crave the baked beans with burnt ends from The Rib Whip. And Wexler's is one of my favorite restaurants in the city...BBQ or not. Matt and the folks are really great and I love the shrimp and grits that appears on the menu every so often as an appetizer.

  8. Southern Sandwich is awesome! Its the real deal Southern BBQ. Their Pulled pork reminds me of Smithfields back in NC.
