The Top 10 Things to Avoid This Summer in NYC

There are plenty of things to look forward to on the edible scene this summer (if you need a primer, check out our summer dining guide), but the hot months also come with some negatives. Um, did you feel the 90-degree weather yesterday? Crowding into an outdoor cafe with a bunch of surly, overheated New Yorkers isn't anyone's idea of fun, especially if the waiter is sweating into your food as he carries it over. Click through the slideshow to see the things you should avoid if you want to keep it cool this summer, and let us know about your warm-weather-dining pet peeves in the comments.

  1. I can only imagine the vitriol you will be receiving from this post.

And those MozzArepa people and other "carnies" work just as hard and probably for less money that some "higher-end" food cart, so be nice and not snobbish.

  2. It's people like you, James Mulcahy, who have ruined the San Gennaro festival for all us real Italo-Americans out there who don't want "artisanal" over-priced bullshit from the assholes who brought us places like Momofuku etc. go back from whence you came!

    1. At San Gennaro you can watch guys in Italo-tees (sleeveless) dripping sweat as a special addition to the zeppoli dough they are mixing with their forearms up to the elbows. Now THAT's authentic eating...gross.

  3. Really Anonymous? you read Zagat and expect its editorial to ignore the populist food reviews and to embrace greasy, cheesy starch balls as "real" food? Why not just read the Post and follow the Poconos food carts around, beer in hand?

  6. Try Paul's Daughter at Coney Island for an authentic, old-fashioned alternative to yucky chains like Nathan's: it's been family-run for 50+ years, and they serve fresh, straightforward food that's not part of a giant food conglomerate. They even hand-cut their fries. Nothing fancy, but it's real boardwalk food that is made and sold by real people.

  7. Why don't you add all the joints on City Island that deep fry frozen seafood at astronomical rip-off prices. The only place really worth visiting is Artie's where everything is fresh and delicately prepared.
