Mermaid Brings Back Crab Boil, Gluten Free Cake Shop Opens on UES

Crab mallets at the Mermaid Inn
What's the fail-safe sign that summer has arrived? Memorial Day, yeah yeah, what we're really talking about is the crab boil. When restaurants like The Mermaid Inn announce that they'll be serving buckets of crab alongside dishes like corn, potatoes and cornbread, you know the season has truly begun. The restaurant's summer crab boil will be available every Tuesday at all three locations for only $24 a bucket (which includes the aforementioned sides) and the promotion will run all summer long. That's a pretty good deal, especially if you know how to get the most meat out of your crustacean - if you need a primer on that check out this handy video produced by the Mermaid crew.

Diners who shy away from gluten should take note of Pip's Place, a new gluten-free bakery that opened its doors on the Upper East Side last week. The sweets-shop is named after the owner's daughter, who was diagnosed with celiac disease, but she and others with gluten allergies can enjoy the over 40 cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other baked goods on offer. The shop also offers gluten-free oatmeal in the morning, which can be enjoyed along with some Brooklyn-roasted coffee. The shop is located at 1729-32 East 1st Avenue, get more info here (212-360-6400).
