The Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Mediterranean Tapas at Kashkaval

Located in Hell's Kitchen, Kashkaval is one of those neighborhood gems that always has people spilling out the door as they try to snag a stool. If you can't stand the wait, you can order most of the dips and spreads that they offer on their Mediterranean-inspired menu to-go. The front of the eatery doubles as a market, and plenty of folks are just dropping in to load up on tapas, meats and cheese.

But the space's true charm lies in the back, where a little dining area sits next to the vino bar. The totally relaxed room has the magic trifecta going for it: good food, solid wines and reasonable prices. When we dropped by, we ordered a plate of cold tapas, which came with four selections for only $12. A little hummus, some red pepper spread, and a hit or two of olive tapenade spread over a basket of warm pita and it was easy to see why this hole-in-the-wall is such a welcome refuge for so many neighborhood residents (a glass or two of Lambrusco didn't hurt either).
