The other night, we were milling around Midtown waiting to see a play, and we wanted to find somewhere to eat beyond the horrible tourist traps that populate the area. Enter Don Antonio, a new pizza joint that's the result of a marriage between some folks from Keste and a pizzeria of the same name in Naples. Located on 50th Street, the eatery is an excellent option for a pre-theater bite fore two reasons:
1. The pies take literally five minutes to come out of the oven after you place your order, meaning you won't be late for curtain time.
2. Pure and simple, the pizzas rock.
We nibbled on the pistacchio e salsiccia, a pie with house-made pistachio pesto, sausage, mozzarella, pecorino and basil. We never had pistachio pesto before, but it added a nice, earty quality to the pie, which paired well with the savory sausage. It was $21, which isn't necessarily cheap, but it's big enough for two people to share if you are just looking for a snack. The best part - we made it to the theater full, and with time to spare.
