7 Picks for Mother's Day Brunch in Philadelphia

Patio at 333 Belrose Bar & Grill
There’s nothing mom likes better than a great brunch on the town – at least, there’s nothing we like better, and we’ve yet to meet a mother who disagrees. On Sunday, May 13, options for a great midday meal abound, with several special buffets and prix fixe menus on offer around the city and the suburbs. Here are our picks for where to treat her to a tasty experience that will help convey a year’s worth of thanks.

Avalon Restaurant: The fountain will be gurgling and the sun bouncing off the ivy that surrounds the hidden, covered patio behind this rustic West Chester Italian. Bring the crew and vodka too so you can take advantage of the free Bloody Mary bar, complimentary with the three-course brunch menu of appetizer (look for pea soup, roasted asparagus and caprese salad), choice of entree and dessert from chef John Brandt-Lee (11 AM-2 PM; $30 and up; 610-436-4100).

Bistrot la Minette: At this Queen Village bistro, the flavorful French cuisine chef Peter Woolsey prepares will go far in expressing gratitude for everything mom does, and you can opt for a table in the brightly colored dining room or outside on the patio. An amuse-bouche of chilled white asparagus soup sets the mood for the three courses that follow, and good luck deciding on dessert - there's almond sponge cake with coffee buttercream and chocolate ganache or a lemon tart with cassis sorbet and a chocolate drizzle ($40; 11:30 AM–9:30 PM; 215-925-8000).

Davio’s: For an elegant setting where you can still relax and dig into great grub, head to this second-floor Northern Italian and select a seat beside the large arched windows overlooking the Rittenhouse streets below. If mom loves decadent dishes like Maine lobster bisque and grilled filet topped with port butter and jumbo shrimp, this three-course refined steakhouse meal will hit the spot, helped along by a complimentary glass of prosecco (1-8 PM; $55; 215-563-4810).

M Restaurant: This hidden gem of a restaurant nestled behind the Morris House Hotel is opening on a Sunday just in honor of Philadelphia matriarchs. Impress the woman of the house with a seat in the blossoming garden patio and a complimentary mimosa to accompany a three-course brunch full of pancakes, quiche and berries with whipped cream (11 AM-2 PM; $40; 215-625-6666).

Square 1682: Chef Guillermo Tellez is pulling out all the stops to dish up an extravagant brunch in the grand ballroom of the Hotel Palomar in Rittenhouse. With scheduled seatings at 11:30 AM and 1 PM, this elegant buffet will feature over 25 different selections, including breakfast fare like almond French toast bananas Foster and meatier choices like Indian-spiced braised lamb. Round out your plate with pastries, fruits, eggs and potatoes and you’ll have a morning mom is sure to remember ($40; $20 kids 12 and under; 215-563-5008).

333 Belrose Bar & Grill: After an extensive renovation added urbane touches to the historic farmhouse, this Main Line New American reopened in time to catch spring fever, which means a special brunch buffet in honor of mothers everywhere. Look for an omelet station, griddled waffles, fresh fruits, hand-carved meats and more as you enjoy the newly chic decor (11 AM–2 PM; $32; $13 for kids five-12 yrs.; 610-293-1000).

Valanni: Treat the mother in your life to some Center City style at this intimate and swanky Wash West small-plater. Enjoy a three-course brunch and be sure to catch the smiles as she nibbles on complimentary chocolates while relaxing in a white leather banquette (10:30 AM-3 PM; $38; 215-790-9494).
