This week the
Nantucket Wine Festival gets under way, which marks opening season for summer dining on the islands. But that's not all that's happening in the area: there are some new kids on the Islands and Cape block. Click through the slideshow to check 'em out.

ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous, It does seem lame, doesn't it. Well, there hasn't been a ton of movement on the vineyard, not since Vineyard Haven approved liquor licenses last year -- which has been the biggest change. However, there is one new place: Martha's Vineyard Chowder Co. in Oak Bluffs is new.

The problem with the Cape is that it is a small market with a short season. The visitors for the most part are not looking for fine dining and the locals won't spend the money, so as a result the venues are a mixture of beach bars type place (Baxter’s) or the Chatham Bars Inn. Any up-market place has a hard time finding a market that will sustain them through the short summer season and the quiet winter one. Many a good restaurant has failed because there just wasn’t a sustainable business for them to be had.
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect for the perspective of Anonymous - he/she omits another class of patron - the weekend wash 'ashore. We spend nearly half of our week on Cape year 'round, and frankly, I was happy to read about some of the new venue choices. Thanks for the article... there's two I'll visit near term.
ReplyDeleteWe are also weekend wash'ashore people with money to spend at nice restaurants. The Cape has many great moderate to high priced eateries, may rivaling Boston restaurants.
DeleteThanks for writing and your input. Depending where you go, there are some great moderately priced restos on the Cape for sure. A few: Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis; Wicked Restaurant & Wine Bar in Mashpee (always dependable); and The Beachcomber in Wellfleet. Oh, and Far Land Provisions in P-Town is fantastic for a quick grab-and-go sandwich, breakfast, bakery. They even have wine and a few, well, provisions.
DeleteMy husband and I spend the summer on the Cape and numerous weekends during the winter. We like fine dining and some of the moderatly priced restaurants, as long as the food is good.
ReplyDeleteThere are not a lot of fine dining restaurants in the Falmouth area and I think they could use one or two more. There are a lot of average, family type restaurants but they are not always consistently good.
After our tour of all the restaurants we usually frequent this spring, we are leaning more to eating in than out !!!! Why, even the average restaurants need to up their game. Especially, when you are paying top dollar for the food.
Even in this slow economy people still like to eat out and want to enjoy a nice dining experience....atmosphere, clean, good food and drink, great service, etc....
Off season is a bit of a challenge for any restaurant.....However, when we come down during the off season, the best restaurants are full !!!!
You need to try The Glass Onion in Falmouth. It's gorgeous, the food is great as is the service, and it's on the upscale side with white tablecloths. Another one, not so high-end, but great food and intimate is Osteria Civetta. Solid Italian from a Bolonga, Italy-native. Also in Falmouth.
