In recent months, it appears that a new ramen restaurant is opening in just about every neighborhood in LA, from Hollywood to Santa Monica. Fortunately, a steaming bowl of this Japanese staple is comforting, fun to eat and a good cheap-eats option. Even the most flavorful, satisfying order, loaded with pork, noodles, egg and scallion, will only set you back about $10 to $12 - and in some cases is enough for two to share. Great list, but Ramen Jinya of Studio City -- with a new outlet coming in West LA -- is one of the top ramen spots in town!
ReplyDeleteerm... this list is centered ALL around west LA, which isn't bad as that's where I live... HOWEVER, it's missing some major players... namely daikokuya.

DeleteI was in agreement with most of this list, until I saw the last slide with Ajisen. Now this list has no credibility for me. It is also missing some of the better places down in Torrance and Gardena - i.e. Asa. In regards to Daikokuya per the comment above, they used to be good, now it's not up to expectations - I was disappointed the last 3 times I have been.

ReplyDeleteIf you enjoy a good ramen you HAVE TO go to Bento Man on Western & Pico. Their miso ramen is the best I've had... and I know my miso ramen!

DeleteIt was a mediocre list to begin with, and you just lost all street cred with your Ajisen pick. Real rameniacs go to Chowhound for recs, not Zagat. The real strength at Tsujita isn't even their ramen - It's their tsukemen. What, you don't know the difference between ramen & tsukemen?
ReplyDeleteThey should add Ducks & Curry to the list. It's a mom and pop shop in San Gabriel. Definitely not as trendy as some of the ones they listed, but the tonkotsu ramen is to die for. No one makes it the same way they do.

I am loyal to Asahi in WLA. Maybe it's not the most authentic, but it's consistently satisfying.

ReplyDeleteYamadaya (Tsukemen!) and Shinsengumi Hakata Ramen are tops for me. Missing is Asa Ramen in Gardena. Their Kotteri Shoyu ramen is excellent. They are open for dinner only though.
ReplyDeleteI've been to several Ramen places from Orange County, L.A. and San Francisco but one still blows me away and it happens to be in the Food Court of Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa it's called "Santouka" ask for the "Salt" Ramen with Special Pork and tell them to add the Savory Hard Boiled Egg and you're golden
ReplyDeleteYou got it right... but their cousin in Mar Vista (on the list) has the same stuff, which I would say is really the BEST RAMEN IN TOWN. Period. Only Setagaya or Ippudo on the East Coast may get around too... well, that is my personal rameniac opinion ;)

ReplyDeleteThe Tsujita LA comments are misleading. Yes, they are open for dinner, but they take credit cards at dinner. They do NOT serve ramen at dinner, but only for lunch which is cash only.
